Adaptive Business Partnering

A developmental program to strengthen the impact of your Business Partner community.

Business Partner roles are often designed to bring strategic perspective into the business.

In practice, they can become more operational over time.

This program supports Business Partners to work more effectively with complexity, influence across boundaries, and enable shared ownership.

About the Program

In many organisations, Business Partners are asked to operate strategically while also responding to day-to-day demands.

Over time, this can lead to a familiar pattern:

  • Requests are handed over rather than explored
  • Business Partners step in to resolve issues for others
  • Conversations happen after key decisions have already been made
  • Expertise is relied on, but influence remains limited

This is not simply a capability gap. It reflects how the role is positioned within the system.

Adaptive Business Partnering is an in-house development program designed to work directly with this pattern.

The program brings together cohorts of Business Partners from within the same organisation. It is not an open enrolment program. The learning is grounded in your context, your relationships, and your live organisational challenges.

Using an adaptive and systems lens, participants build on their technical expertise and develop the capacity to work with complexity, influence across boundaries, and support clearer ownership of decisions and outcomes.

The Experience

Participants join a cohort of peers from across the organisation.

It combines:

  • Practical frameworks that can be used in day-to-day work
  • Reflection on personal patterns, assumptions and responses
  • Dialogue across functions to build shared understanding

Through this work, participants develop their capacity to:

  • Stay with questions long enough to understand what is really being asked
  • Work with complexity across people, relationships and
  • Clarify issues before moving to action
  • Build influence through trust, credibility and connection
  • Turn information into shared understanding through conversation
  • Notice and work with patterns, rather than addressing issues in isolation
  • Support others to take ownership of decisions and outcomes

  Program Themes

Explore how the Business Partner Dilemma shows up in your context, and the organisational patterns that sustain it. Participants map their own experience of the role and work collectively to understand the wider system shaping it—shifting the conversation from personal challenge to shared pattern.
"The Success of the Intervention Depends on the Interiors of the Intervener." Your own stage of development impacts your ability to influence as a culture practitioner, and together we will explore how established mindsets and worldviews can be limiting and the possibilities that can be liberated by expanding mindsets and worldviews. Using the Immunity to Change methodology, you will have the opportunity to reflect on and nurture your own personal growth and development.
The Adaptive Cultures 6 Steps to Building Adaptive Capacity takes us on a journey from building awareness of the need for transformation, through to reflecting on aspirational and current culture, identifying a pathway forward, and building and embedding new capacities. We will explore this framework and consider 3 key levers to consider when designing interventions – Individual, Social, and Structural.
Cultures are not static. They are living systems that evolve, sometimes devolve, and rarely stay the same, and the Adaptive Cultures Framework of Stages of Cultural Evolution describes how cultures evolve from less adaptive to more adaptive. We will explore the framework together, and how it helps us identify what stage of culture will best support an organisation to achieve its aspirations and what stage of culture best describes the current organisational culture.
Many organisations measure Employee Engagement in the belief that good Engagement equals good Culture. Employee Engagement is a key ingredient for organisational success; however it is not a measure of Culture. We will explore the differences between Engagement and Culture and consider how to effectively measure and diagnose Culture using various methodologies, including the Adaptive Cultures Insights Diagnostic.
As we navigate organisational evolution it is useful to consider whether we are approaching it as a living system. From time to time the path is likely to be messy, awkward and difficult. Patience, humanity, empathy for self and others and new learning are all imperatives to continue to evolve. We will explore how, as practitioners, we can celebrate obstacles and imperfection as learning opportunities which are essential in organisations moving forward.
