Adaptive Business Partnering

A Development Program to Strengthen the Impact of your Business Partner Community

Business Partner roles are often designed to bring strategic perspective into the business.

In practice, they can become more operational over time.

This program supports Business Partners to work more effectively with complexity, influence across boundaries, and enable shared ownership.

About the Program

In many organisations, Business Partners are expected to operate strategically while responding to day-to-day demands.

Over time, a familiar pattern can emerge:

  • Requests are handed over rather than explored
  • Business Partners step in to resolve issues for others
  • Conversations happen after key decisions are made
  • Expertise is relied on, but influence remains limited

This is not simply a capability gap. It reflects how the role is positioned within the system. Adaptive Business Partnering is designed to work directly with this pattern. It brings together cohorts from within the same organisation, grounding the learning in your context, relationships, and live challenges.

Through an adaptive, systems lens, participants build on their technical expertise while strengthening their capacity to work with complexity, influence across boundaries, and support clearer ownership of decisions and outcomes.

Who is it for

Business Partners and those in enabling, shared services and Centre of Excellence roles

Working cross areas such as :

  • People & Culture
  • Finance, Risk & Compliance
  • Technology & Digital
  • Legal & Procurement
  • Health, Safety & Quality

 Finding themselves :

  • Working across boundaries without formal authority
  • Navigating competing stakeholder expectations
  • Stepping in to resolve issues for others
  • Seeking to contribute at a more strategic and systemic level
  • Balancing the tension between advising and owning outcomes

 The Experience

Participants join a cohort of peers from across the organisation, working on real challenges drawn from their own context. The program creates space to step back from day-to-day demands and examine how the Business Partner role is currently experienced and how it might evolve in practice.

It combines :

  • Practical frameworks for day-to-day work
  • Reflection on patterns, assumptions and responses
  • Dialogue across functions to build shared understanding

Over time, participants strengthen their capacity to :

  • Clarify issues before moving to action
  • Build influence through trust, credibility and connection
  • Support clearer ownership of decisions and outcomes

  Program Themes

Explore how the Business Partner Dilemma shows up in your context, and the organisational patterns that sustain it. Participants map their own experience of the role and work collectively to understand the wider system shaping it—shifting the conversation from personal challenge to shared pattern.
Examine what it means to move from expert problem-solver to adaptive partner. This includes working with the distinction between capability and capacity, and exploring how your own development shapes how you interpret, engage and influence in complex situations.
Work with seven developmental practices that expand the role of the Business Partner. These practices shift the focus from solving problems to enabling better thinking, shared ownership, and more effective engagement across the system.
Develop a clearer understanding of how culture evolves and how organisational systems shape behaviour. Participants explore how individual, social and structural dynamics interact, and how Business Partners can work more effectively within this complexity.
Learn alongside peers from across functions, using real work as the focus. The cohort becomes a space for shared reflection, challenge and experimentation, building both individual capability and a more aligned approach across the organisation.
Translate insight into action through real-world experimentation. Participants test new approaches in their day-to-day work, reflect on what shifts, and begin to build a practice that continues beyond the program.
